Locke winced as the voice of his best friend pleaded from his answering machine. “C’mon, Locke. Pick up,” Kyrian begged. “He’s still not answering.” This was apparently an aside to Seth, who answered with an indistinct, sympathetic rumble.

He’d spent a long, sleepless night tying up whatever loose ends he could, both with his business and his house. Aspen had never returned, but then again, Locke really hadn’t expected him to.

“We saw the sign, ‘Closed Until Further Notice’. Are you sick?” A pause, then Kyrian sighed. “Listen, I’m just worried about you. You’ve never closed the café like this.” One more sigh. “Okay, well, I’m on my way over, so call if you want me to pick something up.”

Crap. I’d better hustle . He absently touched his cheek. The last thing he wanted was for his friend to see him like this. He healed fast, but the damage done by the alpha was still colourful and stark.

Locke looked wistfully around the only home he’d ever known. He hated to leave his grandmother’s things behind, but his Prius would only hold so much. And he knew that when his alpha said he had twenty-four hours to clear out of town, he meant twenty-four hours—and not a minute more—or he was dead. Tick tock. Never mind that he was leaving behind his home and business and friends and…oh—his whole life.

Pressing his lips together in an effort to stem the emotional tide threatening to overwhelm him, Locke turned his thoughts instead to the future and his improbable change in status. Mate to a powerful mage. Unbelievable for an omega to have mated in the first place, yet the evidence was overwhelming.

Then why did Aspen leave you? Good question. And it would be the first one he’d ask of his new mate, new alpha, new everything.

At least, once he’d found him.

Now. Time to track a mage.
